A few thoughts on comparing ourselves to others....
|
Hello TriQuest Participants...
Comparing ourselves...we all do it....its part of being human...its inevitable that we compare ourselves to others...I think its unrealistic to think that we will not do this...When comparing ourselves to others we learn quickly the lesson that we have heard before..."Life's not fair..."
Someone told me one time that there is always someone stronger, faster, and better looking...reality dictates that everyone in our group has a certain potential, and the level of our ultimate potential is different for each of us...no matter how hard we train many of us are not going to the next Olympics...
Actually, comparing ourselves to others can be helpful in gaging our progress, spurring us on in training, or encouraging us to race to our maximum capabilities...the danger comes when comparison causes us to train in a way that is destructive to accomplishing our personal goals or causes us to think less of ourselves...you have to know the difference...
Its fun to watch the amazing athletes up front...to witness their extraordinary capability...they can do things we never dream of...Scott Tinley, a former winner of the Ironman Triathlon In Hawaii spent an entire day watching all the finishers of this incredible event...after watching the entire field from top finishers to the last, he remarked that those athletes that seemed to express the greatest joy of completing this event where not the top professionals but the ordinary people finishing in the back of the field...
Ever wonder what it would "feel" like to finish first in a race...you may well find out regardless of where you finish in your first triathlon...I truly believe that the pride and joy the first place finisher feels will be no different than the joy you will feel when you cross the finish line knowing that you did your best...that is available to all of us, regardless of our potential..
The bottom line: its not how far you go that matters, but how far you have come....
Onward! Stephen on behalf of the TriQuest coaches
